Welcome to Daffa Down Dillies* -
our family cottage industry.
My husband and I, our 3 children and an ever increasing menagerie of
animals live in Northern Iowa on a 1910 farm that we are slowly
restoring to working order.
We have chosen a lifestyle that supports the philosophies of the
cottage industry and the dedication required to be low impact small
family farmers.
To that end, we try always to purchase our fleeces (the fiber
sheared from an animal) from other family producers. The fiber is then
sent to a mill to be cleaned, carded and sometimes blended - i.e.
the wool/mohair blend.
Once the clean fiber returns to me I begin the centuries old art of hand spinning.
I turn wool into yarn on my spinning wheel - yes they are still
made.
The handspun yarn is then hand dyed, rinsed & left to dry under the porch roof in the summer or
beside the wood cook stove in winter. Finally, yarn in hand, the hand knitting begins and your stocking is
created using a variety of designs.
Two weeks is the usual time of completion and I really can't go much
faster. This work is all truly hand done from beginning to
end. That is why there
are only 24 stockings created in a year.
Whether you are into primitives, collectibles, country or shabby chic these are timeless creations.
I hope you enjoy these beautiful stockings and I know that they will
grow more precious and full of memories as the years pass.
Cheers,
Rebecca
